Florida Health Charts. Not all opioid-exposed babies get a diagnosis of NAS at birth. There are many more opioid-exposed babies than this statistic captures. All babies exposed to opioids during pregnancy can experience changes to the structure and function of their fetal brains, leading to long term outcomes. An NAS diagnosis, or lack of one, does not predict the likelihood or severity of lifelong consequences.

In 2022, the rate of NAS was 4.2 per 1,000 births statewide and is as high as 26 (or 2.6% of births) in the hardest hit counties.

Jeanine brings a strong sense of vision and purpose to her work with drug-exposed children, driven by both personal experience and a deep love for helping kids thrive. For six years, she opened her home and heart as a foster parent, where she cared for two drug-exposed infants—one placed with her short-term, and another she later adopted. It was through this journey that Jeanine recognized a critical gap in support for caregivers raising substance-exposed children.
In response, she founded the Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome Support Group on Facebook, now with over 8k members, to connect and uplift others navigating the same path. With a gift for organization and an unwavering belief in the potential of every child, Jeanine is committed to building a future where all children receive the care they need to grow and succeed.
