For decades, women with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) who become pregnant have been told that the only safe option is to go on a maintenance medication like Methadone, Suboxone or Buprinorphine. Dr. Martin Olsen OBGYN at East Tennessee State University Health, thinks he's found a better way of supporting mothers AND babies through pregnancy.
In this podcast interview, Dr. Olsen explores a new method to prevent Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS). He explains that while Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) can help mothers control cravings and promote recovery, research also shows that it can increase the risk of long-term impacts for babies exposed in utero. Dr. Olsen shares that in his experience, women who choose to taper during pregnancy—when given the autonomy and support to do so—often maintain a very low dose or come off entirely after birth. His perspective highlights the power of intrinsic motivation, empowerment, and wraparound addiction care in improving outcomes for both mothers and children.
